In the frame of the celebration of the 10th International Vaccinium Symposium we have organized a special day of site visits to Venlo on Wednesday 20 June 2012, in order to allow you to enrich your insights in the practical aspects of seeding, harvesting, production and Fresh processing, logistics and supply chain scenes.
In the morning, busses will bring you from various hotel in Maastricht to Venlo where the programme offers you several site visits.At the end of the afternoon busses will bring you back to Maastricht. The schedule will be planned in such a way that you will have abundant time to prepare for the Conference Dinner evening at the castle of Neercanne nearby Maastricht.


1) Blue Berry Day
A whol day of Blue Berry Expierence!

- Innovation, Douven icw BICH
BICH (Blueberry Innovation Centre Holland) is an research institute for growing blueberries in containers and problematic soils.  Main goals for the research centre are: 1) Higher quality of blueberries, 2) Extension of the harvest season, 3) Environmentally friendly method of cultivation.
BICH is situated on the grounds of Douven Blauwe Bessen BV and is founded by Fred Douven and Peter van Dijk. Together with top enterprises such as: Biocontrole BV, BvB substrates BV, Legro substrates BV, Driesvenplant BV, Mts Schrijnwerkers, Mertens BV, Munckhofhorst BV, Douven blueberries BV and Wijswater Advice BV numerous projects in breeding blueberries are carried out.
Bich is leading the investigations into fertilizer, varieties and cultivation methods for growing blueberries. For more information visit our website

Driessen icw propagation

Driesvenplant, 25 years experience
In 1982, the first blueberries were planted by Driessen senior. This was seen as expansion to the existing business. The blueberries were added to the list of products already being grown that included, asparagus, sweet morello cherries and mushrooms. At that time the area of land being planted was 2.8 hectares.
At the beginning of the nineties, the business was strengthened with the addition of the two Driessen sons Marcel and Leon. It was around that time that blueberry plant propagation was started (Driesvenplant BV). Since then, about 550,000 plants are grown annually. In 2001, the sons Marcel and Leon took over the company. In the meantime, the land planted out by Driesvenplant B.V. and Driessen Blueberries B.V.  has grown in size from 2.8 to 60 hectares,  and the container field is 4 hectares. - Crop / broad blueberries, Hayberries
Hayberries is a production of blueberries Family Aerts founded in 1990, the size of approximately 40 hectares with about 150,000 plants.
The company is optimal mechanized riding distances 3 to 1 meter by 2 drip hoses.
Hayberries growing the following varieties:
Blue-Crop, Gold Traube 71, Duke, Elliot, Draper, Ozakblue, Brigitta Blue, Liberty, Aurora.
Picking the blueberries for the fresh market mainly done by hand and also mechanically.
Hayberries is Global G.A.P. and Nature's Choice certified.
For industrial use, the blueberries harvested by machine.
Hayberries has three different growing methods:
- In the open ground on ridges with wood cover,
- In the open ground on ridges with anti-root cloth,
- In container pots on hydroponic cultivation.
The distribution is as follows:
Purchasers, industry, self picking and selling.

From 2005 we also picking and sorting on the machine for the fresh market.
Pick your own and home sales find place at Blue Berrie Hill. The tea house Blue Berrie Hill stands in the middle of blue berry plantation. Each year about 50,000 people visit the tea house. A huge boost for the reputation of the blueberries in the Netherlands and Germany.

- Processing, Sunberry International

Sunberry International is part of ZON fruit & vegetables in Venlo. ZON fruit & vegetables is a cooperation of farmers and delivers retail and trade with a broad assortment of vegetables (tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, asparagus etc). Sunberry International is the specialist in blueberries, strawberries, raspberries, red currants and black berries. At the facilities in Venlo, the fruits and blueberries are prepared for customers, with custom made labels or what the client wishes. Besides that, Sunberry International has machines and equipment to make juices from the blueberries and other soft fruits. Dried and frozen blueberries are also part of the assortment.

A visit to fruit and vegetables companies other than blueberries willing to welcome you for an inspiring and innovative tour. These companies have been selected for their innovations in the field of Fresh supply, energy management and sustainability. This cross-over tour will most certainly surprise and inspire you.

- Tasty Tom

Tasty Tom mmmm… Can I have one more?
In 1995 a few farmers started to give a tomato with a special flavor a name: Tasty Tom. The whole sales is done by ZON fruit & vegetables. The tomatoes are available year-round, because the farmers adjust their planting system. All farmers are using bumbluebees for pollination and controlling pests by natural enemies.
This tomato, with his deep red color, aromatic sweet taste and a weight from 45-55 gram, is perfect for a sandwich or to eat on his own. There are average 7-8 tomatoes on a bunch and the tomatoes are harvested when the last tomato is rip. The tomatoes are very popular in the Netherlands, Germany and Scandinavia.
